Acne is a common condition that usually begins in puberty and affects around 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24. But when the acne is severe and breakouts happen more regularly than just the odd pimple here and there, the effect on a person’s confidence and self-esteem can be devastating.

If you suffer from acne and related scarring, there are cosmetic procedures available that can both improve the appearance of the skin and prevent further breakouts. But first, it’s important to consider why your breakouts are happening in the first place. For some people, a lack of skin care routine and failure to deep cleans the pores to remove debris are to blame. For others, dietary and hormonal factors are the root of the problem, so it’s always advisable to seek advice from a doctor, dermatologist or nutritional therapist to identify the causes. Other factors such as stress, environment and genetics all play a part too.

Cosmetic procedures that can get rid of acne include:

Blemish Excision

If your blemishes are failing to respond to skincare treatments or dietary changes, your dermatologist may recommend excision. A quick and straightforward procedure, this involves a small incision being made in the skin, from which debris can be removed. When the core of the blemish has been cleansed from deep inside, the skin will be able to heal naturally. The procedure may leave a slight scar which will fade over time.

Laser Treatment

Laser treatments to get rid of acne involve the application of a high-intensity pulse of light through a special wand. The light works deep inside the skin to stimulate new cell growth, promote healing and reduce inflammation. In many cases only one laser treatment is required, but you may find you need a few sessions before the area becomes completely clear and blemish free.

Chemical Peels

A chemical peel involves the application of a chemical agent to the skin, smoothing the surface and encouraging the skin to remodel itself. There are different peels available according to the severity of a patient’s acne.

Superficial peels work on the top layers of skin and involve gentle exfoliation. These are often referred to as “lunchtime peels” because they are so quick to perform and only result in slight pinkness, meaning you can go straight back to work afterwards. Medium and deep peels work deeper in the epidermis and require the agent to be left on for longer so it has more time to penetrate the skin. They continue to work after the treatment by encouraging the skin to peel and flake off over the coming weeks to give birth to fresh, new skin free from blemishes. You should expect to experience some tingling and soreness after the procedure, and the technician or doctor performing the peel will give you instructions on how to care for your skin over the following weeks.

Corticosteroid Injections

Also referred to as “intralesional injections”, these involve a steroid being injected into the skin to treat particularly stubborn, painful acne. The needle is small, but the effects are almost instant and highly effective – even large boil-type cystic acne can shrink to a flat surface within just a few hours. This is a popular treatment with patients who find themselves with a blemish emergency before a special occasion, but it should not be used as a long-term solution to acne.
